As part of the overall flood control program, HSDRRS, for the US Army Corps of Engineers, Kiewit-Pittman JV on April 6, 2016 set the main component for flood protection on the back bay side of Empire, LA. The sector gate component for the new Empire Gatebay Structure consists of two sector gates that are 31’-6” tall x 46’-10” wide. When closed they span the width of the new 84’-0” navigation channel through the new Empire Gatebay Structure. Each assembled gate leaf weighs 150 tons and were hoisted and set fully assembled. Both sector gates were delivered via barge from Houston, TX and were set in one day with a 500 ton stiff leg derrick. Crews spent two additional days to transport and set the sector gates into their final resting position at the new Gatebay Structure.
